luncheon. Her topic was about what it means to be a DAR member.

Regent Horton asked each member what came to mind when they thought of the DAR. Many people wonder if it's just a service club, social or genealogical. It's actually all of the above and the way Regent Horton described the DAR was that it was "a network of women who care about our society and each other."
The Daughters of the American Revolution is an orginization you can join because of something someone else did for you. We recognize what our ancestors did to create a new country and break away from the old. Patriotism is promoted because the DAR is proud of our country. The DAR is responsible for the U.S. government's recognition of Constitution week and this year is the 225 anniversary of the U.S. Constitution. A replica of the 1787 flag was donated to each state to be displayed during the week of celebration.

The DAR also raises awareness of historic properties and graveyards. The DAR's own Constitution Hall is the largest auditorium in Washington D.C. Over 100 years ago a group of women set out to raise the funds for that building and did remarkably well despite naysayers. Now the building is in need of major repair and it's up to this generation to restore it. The Daughters of The American Revolution also contributed to the World War II Memorial and to the refurbishment of The Statue of Liberty. Veterans are recognized often and in 2011 the DAR gave to veterans who lost their homes in the April tornadoes around the south.

Education is also a top priority of the DAR. Students with the same values are recognized and rewarded. Scholarships and donations to schools such as the Kate Duncan Smith school in North Alabama are ways that DAR helps educate children.

The members of Francis Marion Chapter were encouraged to use their resources such as the state and national level DAR websites to gain an understanding of this organization. Mrs. Horton also mentioned that she had a blog for members to read and learn from. You can click here to read the Regent's blog.

<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; In 1955, the Daughters petitioned Congress to set aside September 17-23 annually to be dedicated for the observance of Constitution Week. The resolution was later adopted by the U.S. Congress and signed into Public Law #915 on August 2, 1956 by President Dwight D. It wasn’t until the early to mid 20th century that doctors were able to make advances in vascular medicine and surgery.
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Century Gothic', sans-serif; Tales were told of Cahawba's humble beginnings as a pioneer town and Alabama's first capital city to it's rise in the cotton industry before the Civil War and then to it's demise after a devastating flood.

Old Cahawba is known as a relic landscape and virtual ghost town where few standing buildings remain. The footprints of buildings can still be seen in the grass and old gardens grow in almost the exact places they were planted. Archeological studies have been done to retrace the city's history and rebuild some of it's buildings. Visitors are free to walk the grounds and take a part of Alabama history not locked up in the archives.

Ms. Derry brought artifacts found in a recent archeological dig. They were pieces of broken drinking glasses, bottles, and window panes. Located on the grounds of the former state house it was supposed that the politicians of the day were getting in drunken brawls. After some research into the old records it was discovered that the state house building was sometimes used for "parties of pleasure". Apparently they got out of hand and it was recorded that they were to not be held in the state house building anymore!

Also at the November meeting, a collection was taken up by Mrs. Ann Cheney for the local veterans' hospital. These funds will be used to buy gifts for veterans in the hospital during the Christmas holidays.

Betsy Ross Visits Chapter Meeting

Francis Marion Chapter NSDAR had a special guest at the October luncheon. Betsy Ross appeared to tell her story (as told by daughter Lexie Turnipseed).

The famed creator of our American Flag has a remarkable story of living through the Revolutionary War.
